What is JPG?

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the most widely used image format in the world, standardized in 1992 as ISO/IEC 10918-1. It uses discrete cosine transform (DCT) based lossy compression wrapped in the JFIF or Exif container format. JPG files are supported by virtually every device, browser, application, and operating system ever made — from 1990s flip phones to modern smartphones, from Windows Paint to Adobe Photoshop. The format supports 24-bit color (16.7 million colors) and adjustable compression levels, letting you balance file size against image quality. At quality 92, which is our default, JPG files are visually indistinguishable from the original while being significantly smaller than lossless formats like PNG or BMP.

What is a HEIC File?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is an image format used by Apple devices running iOS 11 and later. It uses the HEVC (H.265) codec for compression, producing files roughly half the size of equivalent JPEGs while maintaining the same visual quality. Despite its advantages, HEIC files are not universally supported across all platforms and applications, which is why conversion tools like this one exist.

HEIC vs JPG

HEIC uses the HEVC (H.265) codec to achieve roughly 50% smaller file sizes than JPEG at equivalent visual quality — a 3 MB HEIC photo might become a 6 MB JPEG. However, HEIC's compression advantage comes at a cost: limited compatibility. JPG files open instantly on Windows, Linux, Android, every web browser, every email client, every social media platform, and every image editor. HEIC requires specific codec support that many platforms still lack. For archival and sharing purposes, JPG's universal compatibility outweighs HEIC's compression efficiency. JPG also supports rich EXIF metadata including GPS coordinates, camera settings, and timestamps, making it ideal for photography workflows.

Why Convert HEIC to JPG?

Frequently Asked Questions

What quality setting should I use when converting HEIC to JPG?

For most purposes, the default quality of 92 is ideal — it produces files that are visually indistinguishable from the original HEIC while keeping file sizes reasonable. For web usage where smaller files matter, 80-85 still looks excellent. For archival or print, use 95-100. Below 70, you may start noticing compression artifacts around edges and in gradients.

Will converting HEIC to JPG preserve my photo metadata?

Yes, if you leave the EXIF preservation setting enabled. Our converter can transfer EXIF data including camera model, exposure settings, GPS location, date taken, and orientation. If you prefer privacy when sharing photos, toggle the EXIF strip option to remove all metadata before download.

How much larger will my JPG files be compared to the original HEIC?

At the default quality of 92, JPG files are typically 1.5 to 2.5 times larger than the equivalent HEIC. A 2 MB HEIC photo usually becomes 3-5 MB as a JPG. The exact ratio depends on image content — photos with lots of detail and texture compress less efficiently than images with large uniform areas. You can reduce the quality slider to get smaller files if needed.

Is there any quality loss when converting HEIC to JPG?

Technically yes — both HEIC and JPG are lossy formats, so converting between them introduces a second round of compression. However, at quality 92 or above, the additional quality loss is imperceptible to the human eye. Pixel-level differences exist but are invisible in normal viewing. For truly lossless conversion, choose PNG as your output format instead.
